13 Reasons Why: Resources for parents and young people


The second series of "13 Reasons Why" starts 18 May and all 13 episodes will be available to view at this time.

DHBs have been working with other government agencies and service providers to develop resources around this controversial series.

The key themes in this series are:

  • sexual assault
  • bullying
  • drug taking
  • suicide
  • domestic violence
  • gun violence
  • self-harm
  • serious assault

Online resources for viewers and their families/care-givers

1. The Mental Health Foundation hub includes information on where to go for assistance, and (from 7pm 18 May) an episode-by-episode discussion guide. www.mentalhealth.org.nz/13ReasonsWhy 

2. The Chief Censor has released a guide for parents: Talking with young people about what they’re watching.

3. Netflix has created a website to assist viewers, their parents and caregivers.

4. The Mental Health Foundation has a list of help contacts

5. Support is also available from a trained counsellor anytime by calling or texting 1737

6. Find mental health support services in the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough regions.
