The function and diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver all fall under the study of Gastroenterology.
Patients with conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and pancreatitis may be referred to see a Gastroenterologist.
If required they perform specialist examinations including gastroscopy and colonoscopy to examine the gastrointestinal tract.
The gastroenterology team at Nelson Marlborough Health offer consultations for people who have been referred through a GP (doctor), or other specialist colleagues.
