About the Medical Unit

The Medical Unit is an inpatient unit for the treatment of a wide variety of medical illnesses, such as those affecting the lungs, heart, brain and kidneys, that do not require surgery.

Our Medical Unit has 30 beds. There are 20 single rooms, two four bedrooms and one two-bedroom.

How long you are admitted to the Medical Unit will depend on how unwell you are and your progress during your stay.

Generally, patients stay about three days in our unit.

Our Medical Unit is on the fourth floor of the inpatient building of Nelson Hospital.

Each bed has their own phone. If you wish to contact a patient please ring the Medical Unit reception on (03) 546 1644 and you will be put through to the patient if appropriate. These phones can be used for patients to make local calls out.

Visiting hours: 2.30pm – 8.30pm. However, if you wish to visit outside of these hours, please ask at reception.

Family and whānau requests to stay to support their relative can usually be accommodated,  so please ask your nurse.
