About Medical Services
NMDHB’s objective is to provide a 24-hour, 7 days per week inpatient assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment for people aged 15 years and over.

Medical Services are for people who have been referred through a General Practitioner (Doctor), Emergency Department and Specialists.

Services Covered
Medical Services covers acute (sudden) and elective (requested) procedures on an inpatient, outpatient and day case basis. Outpatient clinics provide diagnostic, preventative and early treatment options for procedures on referrals from General Practitioners and other Specialists. Medical Services provided comprise General Medicine and the following sub specialty interests on a regional basis:
- Gastroenterology
- Cardiology
- Neurology
- Renal
- Diabetes/ Endocrinology
- Respiratory
- Oncology
- Dermatology
- Rheumatology
- Infectious Diseases
Support services that assist the medical services are:

Health Education Services endeavour to encourage individuals (including children) with diabetes, asthma and cardiac conditions to take responsibility for their health conditions and to encourage community-based care by discharging to a lower level of care as soon as it is appropriate. There is close liaison with community groups.

The Physiology/ECG Department provides resting ECG, Treadmill, Holter monitoring, Respiratory Function testing, Pacemaker Clinics, Claudication tests. In Nelson stress echo and cardiac echo are also part of this service.
