Health alert placed on all Waikato streams, rivers, estuaries, coastal beaches and lakes affected by recent severe weather events

A health alert has been issued today by National Public Health Service (NPHS), advising people to avoid all recreational water activities at streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal beaches affected by flooding. People should stay out of these water bodies for at least 72 hours after rainfall has stopped.

Dr Kate Meerkerk, Medical Officer of Health, says that swimming in flood-affected water or gathering or eating kaimoana from these areas during this period may cause illness. Even after 72 hours, people should avoid water that looks dirty, discoloured, or smells unpleasant, and do not eat dead or distressed fish or shellfish.

Flooding can also disturb cyanobacteria (toxic algae) mats, which sometimes sit on the river or lake bed. When disturbed, these mats can break apart, float to the surface or wash up on the edges, increasing the risk of exposure to toxins. Cyanobacteria can look like brown or black mats with foam on the water’s edge, and may smell musty. Avoid contact with water where these are present and keep children and dogs away.

The public is also reminded to stay away from floodwater at all times. Do not try walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater. As little as 15cm of moving water can knock an adult over, and 50cm can carry away most vehicles. Floodwater may also contain sewage, farm runoff, chemicals and debris, increasing the risk of injury and illness. If you have contact with floodwater or contaminated items, you should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

“If you feel unwell after coming in contact with flood affected waters you should seek health advice from your GP or by calling Healthline on 0800 611 116. Please also report it to the NPHS Waikato office on 07 838 2569” said Dr Meerkerk.
