Making our environments – where we live, learn, work and play – smokefree is an important component to achieving the Smokefree Aotearoa New Zealand 2025 goal.

Smokefree environments can help to:

  • protect people (especially children) from second-hand smoke
  • support people who are trying to quit smoking
  • reduce the number of times that young people see smoking – the less smoking is seen, the less normal it appears and the less likely it is that young people will start smoking.

In New Zealand, there is a high level of public support for increasing smokefree outdoor areas in our community.
