Nurses: A force for change
Today is International Nurses Day, celebrated worldwide on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.
In a message sent to all staff today, Nelson Marlborough Health Chief Executive Chris Fleming and Director of Nursing and Midwifery Pamela Kiesanowski acknowledged the expertise and commitment of all nursing staff at Nelson and Wairau hospitals, and the public health, district and community nurses in our regions.
The theme this year is ‘A force for change: Improving Health Systems’ Resilience’. Frances Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of the International Council of Nurses and Council President Judith Sharman say that nurses are has to say about nurses’ integral role in strengthening global health systems.
They say: “As a member of the single largest group of health professionals, with a presence in all settings, nurses can make an enormous impact on the resilience of health systems. Every decision that you make in your practice can make a significant difference in the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire system.”
Nelson Marlborough Health celebrated International Nurses Day with breakfast and afternoon tea functions for all nurses across our region. A raffle was also held to raise funds for the Girl Child Education Fund, launched by the Florence Nightingale International Foundation in 2005.
