Project Whakatupuranga - One step closer

Jenny Black, Chair of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board was delighted to see the appropriation of funding for the redevelopment of Nelson Hospital announced in this week’s budget.

Budget 2022 recognises the need to start the redevelopment of the Nelson Hospital as a priority capital project and includes funding for design and enabling works.

“A new Nelson Hospital is going to be great for the people of Te Tau Ihu, and personally, I think this is a fantastic result for both our staff and our community.

“Investing in health infrastructure as part of reforming the Health System is not only essential for patients and whānau but for staff too,” Jenny explains.

“The team at Nelson Marlborough Health have been working hard to get the project to this point and we are wrapped to see the appropriation in this year’s budget. It means we are one step closer to a new hospital.”

Recently, staff have been engaged in the formation of a concept design which articulates the relationships between the clinical functions, services, building and other facilities on the hospital campus.

“During the peak of Omicron, when staff were already going the extra mile focussing on the health needs of today, we were asking for their feedback and input into the concept design and future delivery of health services.

“Their engagement and feedback into this process is a credit to their integrity, and a clear demonstration of their commitment to our community.”

Next Steps – Detailed Business Case and Detailed Design

“In order to secure the funding appropriated in the budget, we will be providing a detailed business case, made up of the site master plan and concept designs for the preferred options, to the Capital Investment Committee in July.”

“A lot of work has occurred to get us to this point and with funding secured, we will be able to get right into the detail of the first phase of the new build, the Acute Services Building,” Jenny explains.

The Acute Services Building is expected to be completed by 2030.
