Parents donate artwork to Nelson Hospital Paediatric Department

The whānau of nine-year-old Daniel Alexander Irving, who sadly passed away in 2022, have kindly gifted artwork to the Nelson Hospital Paediatric Department as a token of gratitude for the care their son received.

Daniel's parents Stacey and Andrew, and his brother Zac, chose 'Heart of Gold' by Golden Bay artist Sarah Brown as it represents Daniel’s very kind and positive nature.

"The paediatric team on the ward and in outpatients were an integral part of our lives for nine years. The care we received  for Daniel and also for our whānau was exemplary. We will always be grateful for their care and commitment to Daniel's comfort and wellbeing.

"The Heart of Gold artwork is gifted to honour Daniel's precious life, to thank the entire paediatric team, and to acknowledge the whānau who dedicate their hearts to their special children", they said.

Fiona McGill, Paediatrician at Nelson Hospital, said the whole paediatric team would like to sincerely thank the Irving whānau for such a beautiful piece of art.

“Daniel and his parents spent a lot of time with us during his short life and we remain humbled by their strength and kindness, which is what this artwork signifies. It will be very much appreciated in our new outpatient department”, she said.

The heart shaped mixed media artwork now hangs in the corridor of the Paediatric Department.

Artwork is known to put patients and their whānau at ease in hospital settings by creating a calm and welcoming environment.
