Wahi Oranga - mental health admission unit

Wahi Oranga – mental health admission unit provides treatment for adolescents and adults who cannot be treated in the community and require a short period of time in inpatient care.

Referral criteria

Persons requiring specialised inpatient assessment and treatment for an acute, severe or crisis mental health episode. 

Referral must be via another Nelson Marlborough Health mental health team.

Older persons mental health admission unit

The Older Persons Mental Health Admissions Unit provides treatment for older persons with acute inpatient assessment needs related to dementia, mental health decline who cannot be treated in the community and require a short period of time in inpatient care. Referral then to aged residential care or support service after assessment.

Referral criteria

Persons requiring specialised inpatient assessment and treatment for an acute or severe mental health crisis  or functional decline that poses risk. Referral must be via another Nelson Marlborough Health mental health team.

Visiting hours

Monday to Friday 3pm to 8.30 pm (or by arrangement) Sat, Sun & Public Holidays 10.30 to 8.30 pm. (or by arrangement)

Tipahi Mental Health provides inpatient mental health rehabilitation within a hospital setting.

Referral criteria

Referrals to Tipahi Mental Health come through liaison with Wahi Oranga mental health admission unit or the needs assessment and co-ordination service.
