Nelson Maternity Unit

Nelson Hospital provides a high quality maternity service for women and their families from the Nelson, Tasman, Golden Bay, Murchison and Pelorus region.

Located on Level three of Nelson Hospital, Nelson Maternity unit is a warm, modern environment focused on providing quality maternity care by our team of friendly and professional core midwives, obstetric and paediatric teams and support services.

Nelson Maternity Unit has:

  • four antenatal beds
  • four birthing rooms
  • a birthing pool room
  • ten postnatal rooms.
The facility has a private roof top garden area accessible off the birthing rooms.

Women may also transfer to Motueka or Golden Bay primary maternity units from Nelson hospital for their postnatal care.

Nelson Hospital has been certified by the Ministry of Health and the maternity unit has been accredited as a Baby Friendly hospital which means it meets the highest standards of maternity care in New Zealand.

There is an outpatient Obstetric clinic that you may be referred to during your pregnancy if you require specialist obstetric care. This is located on Level three of Nelson Hospital.

  • 24/7 Core Midwifery care – a team of experienced midwives providing high quality care with your Lead Maternity Carer (LMC)
  • 4 birthing suites and 14 inpatient beds. Most beds are in single rooms with shared en suite facilities
  • Dedicated operating theatre for cesarean sections located next to the Maternity Unit
  • Water birth facilities
  • The Know Your Own Midwife (KYOM) midwifery team is based at Nelson Maternity Unit
  • Pukenga Hauora service – supporting the cultural needs of inpatients identifying as Maori in hospital.
  • Specialist obstetricians and paediatricians on call to provide specialist consultation to women and babies if required.
  • Specialist clinics for women with medical conditions such as diabetes.
  • Anaesthetic services for epidural pain relief during labour.
  • 10 cot Neonatal Unit (Special Care Baby Unit) located nearby the maternity unit for babies who require additional care after birth
  • Additional support services such as breastfeeding support, smoking cessation support and the newborn hearing screening programme. 

 

Te Whare Whᾱnau (in Motueka) provides free, flexible and family focused maternity care for families in the Nelson-Tasman region. Te Whare Whᾱnau is a primary maternity facility working with local Lead Maternity Carers to provide quality maternity care in a homely, peaceful environment for labour, birth and postnatal care during the first few days.

Te Whare Whᾱnau consists of:

  • two birthing rooms
  • a birthing pool
  • three individual postnatal rooms with double beds so partners can stay during the postnatal care period.

Women birthing in Nelson can also transfer to Te Whare Whᾱnau after their birth to stay for their postnatal care. Women receive full midwifery care and hotel services. Breakfast and dinner meals are also provided free for partners.

Te Whare Whᾱnau provides 24/7 midwifery care for all women staying in the facility. The facility has been independently certified as a maternity hospital by the Ministry of Health and certified as a Baby Friendly hospital which means they meet the highest standards of maternity care in New Zealand.

Te Whare Whᾱnau also provides clinic rooms for antenatal checkups and a free breastfeeding clinic.

Wairau Maternity Unit provides antenatal, labour and birth and postnatal inpatient facilities for women from the Marlborough region.
The  Wairau Maternity Unit has:
  • three birthing rooms
  • a pool room
  • 8 individual antenatal and postnatal  beds.
The unit has an established private garden area off the birthing rooms.
There is an outpatient Obstetric clinic you may be referred to if you require specialist obstetric care. This is located next to the Maternity unit.
When you choose to have your baby at Wairau Hospital you will be cared for by friendly, professional staff in a bright, warm, modern environment in our new facility.

  • Anaesthetic services for epidural pain relief during labour
  • Neo natal unit (Special Care for Babies unit) is located right next door to the maternity unit in the paediatric department
  • Pukenga Hauora service – supporting the cultural needs of inpatients identifying as Maori in hospital.

 

Golden Bay Maternity Unit in the Golden Bay Integrated Family Health Centre provides a primary birthing facility and postnatal stay for women in the Golden Bay region.Women can transfer from Nelson Maternity Unit to the Golden Bay maternity unit following birth for the postnatal inpatient stay when appropriate.

The maternity unit consists of:

  • one birthing room with a birthing pool.
The maternity facility meets the national Baby Friendly Standards and Accreditation.

Golden Bay maternity services is a unique model which enables women living in the rural Golden Bay region to have direct access to locally based Midwifery Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs). Nelson Marlborough Health and Nelson Bays Primary Health supports the LMCs to ensure a sustainable maternity service to meet the needs of the local community.

The LMCs provide women with the choice of home birth, primary facility birth and postnatal stay or secondary maternity care in Nelson.

Tertiary maternity care

Nelson Marlborough Health works closely with Tertiary Maternity Services, Fetal Medicine Specialists and Neonatal Intensive Care services for women and babies who require intensive care and monitoring during pregnancy and for premature birth prior to 32-34 weeks gestation.  People who require transfers to tertiary care are usually taken to Wellington.
