The service provides specialist hospital care to people from within the Nelson Marlborough region who meet the access criteria.

The Hospital Dental department provides oral health services that are an essential part of inpatient hospital medical or surgical treatment.

These include dental services that require hospital admission e.g., services requiring general anaesthetic, general and specialist oral health services for persons needing special care because of medical conditions or disabilities and general and specialist oral health services for persons with severe conditions that cannot be treated appropriately in private practice.

It also provides limited oral health services for people with a current Community Services Card holders on referral by a health professional. Treatment is limited to relief of pain.

The hospital does provide emergency services for trauma, severe orofacial infections and uncontrolled oral bleeding.

The Nelson Hospital and Wairau Hospital Dental department does not provide emergency toothache services. Please try your own dentist first. After hours urgent dental advice is available from the Duty Dentist on mobile 027 448 2424. Note: private dental fees apply.


The Nelson Marlborough Health has two centres where dental services are provided.
