NMDHB provides a 24-hour clinically-integrated Emergency Department (ED) for emergency and acute presentations. This is part of a secure pathway from initial assessment to admission at the appropriate facility for definitive care.

All patients receive a waiting time category (triage). The response to each patient depends on his or her triage category and on pre-arranged patient flow plans.
Those patients with more minor injury or illness are likely to have to wait for long periods in Emergency to be treated and alternatively you may contact your local GP or After Hours Duty Doctor

(Maori health workers) work alongside the clinical care of Maori patients (tangata mauiui). The role of the Pukenga Hauora is to bring a cultural perspective to assessment, treatment, care and discharge planning.

- 2 coin operated Internet Kiosks are located in the foyer area of Level 2 of the new Inpatient Building (adjacent to the shop & cafe). Charges are set at $2 for 15 minutes and they can be used by patients, visitors and staff.
offers accommodation to anyone from out of town, including relatives and whanau of patients, before or after treatment at Nelson Hospital. The house, on the hospital site, is the responsibility of Altrusa House Trust but run day-to-day by NMDHB. Accommodation is arranged through Nelson Hospital reception, or after hours phone 03 546 1800. Altrusa House Trust can be contacted at PO Box 805, Nelson).
Altrusa House has four twin rooms and two single rooms. Meals can be ordered through the Information Receptionist (weekdays) or via the Telephone Operators at weekends.

at Wairau Hospital has recently been renovated and the menu extended. The café is not just for staff. Patients, families and other visitors are most welcome to use “Flavours Café”, which is open from 8:30am – 4:15pm from Monday to Friday. A range of hot and cold food and drinks are available, including a blackboard menu, which changes regularly.
