When I need Care >Mental Health
|
The World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows mental illness accounts for 11% of the global burden of disease, which predictively will rise to 15% by 2020 when depression will be the most significant disease throughout the world.
A large section of the service NMDHB is contracted to provide directly is concentrated on the delivery of mental health services to the 3% of the population who at any given time are most severely affected by mental illness.
Ongoing service planning and development recognises that there are a high number of people (a further 17%)
in the community whose lives are significantly affected by mental health issues.
NMDHB funds a range of Mental Health services, provided either directly by the DHB, or by agencies contracted by the DHB.
Please use these links below to see the various services provided and to access contact details for each of the services listed.
|
Primary health care services are considered the first point of contact to meet your health needs. Primary health care is predominantly community based and comprises a range of services from health promotion and screening through to diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Primary health care includes services such as (but not limited to) general practitioners, mobile nursing services, community health services (for e.g. plunket,), Maori health services, pharmacy services, maternity, family planning, sexual health services, dentistry and complementary or alternative therapies (for e.g. traditional medicines such as Rongoa Maori). These services are provided by a wide range of community based health practitioners and support workers. However, the majority of primary mental health services are delivered by your general practitioner.
To find out about the location, of general practice teams and their fees, contact Nelson Bays PHO for Nelson/Tasman communities at www.bewell.org.nz or Kimi Hauora Wairau for the Marlborough community on www.marlboroughpho.org.nz
