The Iwi Health Board are mandated by the eight Manawhenua Iwi of Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui as the Iwi relationship board to the NMDHB Board.
The Memorandum of Agreement outlines the purpose and function of the partnership. The original Memorandum was signed on 29th September 2001. Since then it has been reviewed and a new Memorandum was signed on 13th September 2007.
The function of the Iwi Health Board, as described in the Memorandum of Agreement, is to provide governance advice to the NMDHB board on all strategic matters that impact on the health and disability status of Maori in the rohe/ region of Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui through:
• monitoring agreed Maori health and disability outcomes;
• positive influence of key strategic policy of the NMDHB relative to Maori;
• monitoring engagement and participation activity of Maori at all levels of the DHB;
• monitoring activity that builds and develops Maori capacity;
• provision of strategic advice relative to key service development;
• provision of advice to NMDHB on relevant consultation for strategic projects.

A 30 year vision has been developed for the district. This long-term vision will make sure that actions developed today will have a positive impact throughout the lives of children born this year.
The NMDHB Board and IHB have joint Kaitiakitanga/Stewardship of the vision.
