Emergency Planning > Hospitals

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is the predominant provider of publicly funded health services in Nelson and Marlborough. It does this through its provider division. The division provides an extensive range of services and manages patient facilities that extend across the top of the South Island. The Provider division has 5 Hospitals throughout the region.

Our Hospitals are Prepared
In line with the Emergency Management strategy, the districts Hospitals have regular training and exercises during the year which deal with emergency scenarios such as  mass casualty, major utility failure, or natural disasters.
Staff within the NMDHB and the Hospitals also participate in Coordinated Incident Management System or CIMS training.

Other Testing and Preparedness

The two main hospitals (Nelson and Wairau) also undergo monthly Emergency Power Supply System  (EPSS) testing to ensure that all systems are ready to go in the event of a minor utility failure. As a part of the regular testing program it was highlighted that the Nelson Hospital development had outgrown its EPSS capacity, the NMDHB has approved a budget of 1.8m to improve the system and increase its capacity.

Both hospitals also have large emergency water reservoirs on site that have been put to the test in recent months and also allowed both hospitals to function normally without loss of service.

The Emergency Management team also meet monthly with the Hospital Emergency Planning Committees to discuss any current issues or incidents that may affect the hospitals response or emergency planning.
