NMDHB recognise that nurses are a key workforce group within the New Zealand Health System. We recognise that nurses help bridge the gap between coverage and access to health care through their ability to coordinate increasingly complex care for a wide range of patients within primary and secondary care. To achieve this, nurses should be able to fully extend their skills with advanced education where the value of their contribution is realised across practice settings and in full partnership with other health professionals.
Advanced education supports innovative professional nursing practice through the integration of evidence into practice achieving enhanced quality of care for our community. Post graduate nursing education programmes also build on the foundation skills, knowledge and abilities of registered nurses gained in pre-registration educational programmes.
In order for nurses to practice at the full extent of their skill advanced education is supported through funding from Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ).
Health Workforce New Zealand provides Postgraduate Funding to NMDHB through the Director of Nursing and Midwifery on an annual contractual basis. These funds are prioritised and allocated according to the workforce needs of the district. Specifications for post graduate programmes of education can be found here.
