Disability Support is a department of Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. It is a not for profit organisation with a 24/7 focus on making a positive difference in the lives of disabled people.
Based in Central Nelson we have strong links within the NMDHB as well as the wider disability support community.
Disability Support services are a division of Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and provide residential support, day services and respite care for people with an intellectual or physical impairment. We have been providing support for over 150 years.
Intellectual Disability services originated from Ngawhatu and Braemar hospital in Nelson. For over thirty years now we have provided support for people in suburban homes.
Physical Disability services originated from a nation wide campaign to provide opportunities for people who had experienced traumatic or acquired brain injury who had no where to go other than to stay in the public hospital system. The service in Nelson commenced in the late 1980's at 22 Tasman Street.
• We acknowledge the social model of disability and have adopted the values as stated in the New Zealand Disability Strategy (2001) as important concepts by which to make service and community developments.
• We acknowledge the five concepts introduced by John O’Brien (1987) Choice, Respect, Partnership, Community Participation, and Community Presence as essential components for service direction to create personal and social change.
• We acknowledge the Health and Disability Commission Code of Rights. The consumer is at the forefront of services.
• We acknowledge "To have an 'Ordinary' Life" (2003) and the aspirations of disabled people to access the everyday things that others take for granted.
• We acknowledge the principles of "Healthy Work Environments" as developed by HWAC 2006, and believe that accessing quality staff is fundamental to providing quality service.
