About NMDHB > Charitable Trust & Contributions

Hospitals in the Nelson Marlborough region have been managing trust funds donated by former patients, friends of the hospital and members of the public for many years.

In December 1999, the Nelson Marlborough Hospitals’ Charitable Trust was established to create more independence from the District Health Board. An independent auditor, lawyer, trustees and the District Health Board’s Chief Executive make up the Charitable Trust team who manage trust funds.

One of the functions of the Trust is to accept and manage community donations to ensure money is used for the specific purpose it was intended. When making a donation, people can specify what they want their donation used for or they can give for general purposes. Some specific purposes for which donations are particularly beneficial are:
  • Staff education services and facilities
  • Artwork and other improvements to the physical environmental, such as landscaping
  • Medical and other equipment
  • Specific services, wards or departments

Completed Projects
  • Confidence course in west-facing Assessment Treatment & Rehabilitation area
  • Funds for purchasing artwork conductive to rehabilitation and healing
  • Historic photograph collection
  • Display boards for securing historic photograph collection
  • Carving for mortuary area
  • Courtyards and landscaped gardens in Mortuary, ICCU, Radiology and Emergency areas
  • Landscaped and interactive garden in Assessment Treatment & Rehabilitation Unit

  • Donation of various artworks, mural drawings throughout the hospital
  • Information space with health promoting materials
  • Carter Holt Harvey Children’s playground area and play equipment specifically designed for rehabilitation and free play
  • Chapel carving
  • Mosaic artwork for drinking fountains
  • Wairau gym equipment
  • Upgrade to ICCU monitoring system.
  • Landscaping for Murchison Community Hospital
Hospital Redevelopments
The Trust has participated in implementing the Health-Promoting Hospitals concepts by managing fundraising for projects additional the Nelson Hospital site redevelopment in 2003.  A similar approach is being undertaken for the redevelopment of Wairau Hospital.

Contributions
NMHCT welcomes donations and bequests from individuals, groups and businesses to assist the provision of services. Such donations can help the organisation to provide enhanced services, equipment and environments over and above the core level that is funded by the government.

Donations and bequests are managed through the Nelson Marlborough Hospitals’ Charitable Trust. They can be given specific or general purposes.  Donations of any size, from the public or from businesses and other organisations, are greatly appreciated. All individual donations over $5 are tax deductable. Donations made by companies may be tax deductible.

It is possible to arrange a bequest within your will and we suggest you consult your solicitor and your will could include the following:

“I give (show amount or asset) to the Nelson Marlborough Hospitals’ Charitable Trust (for the general purposes of the Trust/for the specific purposes of…) and I declare that the receipt of a person who appears to be a proper officer of the Trust shall be a discharge to my trustees and my trustees shall not be obliged to see to the application or destination of the gift.”

Goldpine provided the NMHCT letterhead and brochures.
