When I Need Care > Chaplaincy

Hospital Chaplains
Chaplains are an integral part of the healthcare team. Members of the chaplaincy team are specifically trained for hospital ministry and visit the wards each day. We are available to staff, patients and their whanau / family.

As chaplains our role is to support a person facing challenging life issues that are having an impact on their sense of well-being.

The Nelson Chaplaincy team is led by the Reverend Debbie Smith, and the Wairau Chaplaincy team is led by the Reverend Kevin Gwynne.

we offer:

~ time to listen
~ friendship
~ encouragement
~ guidance
~ prayer
~ bedside communion
~ anointing
~ In addition to more formal services for baptisms, weddings, celebrations and funerals.

Both hospital Chapels are always open for rest, peace, quiet and worship. They offer an inclusive religious and cultural space that welcomes everyone of all faiths or none.

In Nelson prayers are offered every Tuesday 11.30 – 12.30 in the chapel. All are welcome.
At Wairau Hospital, an Ecumenical Service is held every Wednesday at 11am in the Chapel. All are welcome.
